Magellan Roadmate 1470 Portable Gps Navigator Review

The Magellan RoadMate 1470 portable GPS navigator is definitely an improvement over the original RoadMate. This one has a color screen with touch functionality. The screen is around 4.7 inches wide and that is wide enough to see the maps and addresses without any problems.

The RoadMate 1470 has a slim design and is just around 0.7 inches thick. That makes it really slick to carry without feeling the weight, which is hardly 2 pounds. The icons in the start menu are large enough to see clearly and the navigator has preloaded maps of the US, Canada and Puerto Rico, displaying 6 million points of interest. So, you can find hotels, restaurants, gas stations and airports without much ado; something everyone wants when traveling.

You can personalize icons with your favorite destinations, set multiple destination routes and even access the American Automobile Association Tourbook and Roadside Assistance menu. Although the GPS navigator does not have automatic spoken directions, it does give the names of the streets. In addition, this sleek model has a windshield mount and power adapter. If you want to connect the GPS navigator to your computer, you can do it with the help of a USB cable and the software that comes along with it.

With all these unique features, the Magellan RoadMate 1470 portable GPS navigator has a few cons. Some users say that it takes time to boot up unlike the other RoadMate navigators. In addition, the voice generated is too computer like and the touch screen is not as responsive. However, this could be a single piece problem and cannot be generalized.

Many users find the power button difficult to operate as it is a push button instead of a toggle. In addition, the keyhole slot for mounting is at the back but the USB cum power port is too close to it. So, once you mount the GPS navigator, the power adaptor cable can only be attached at a right angle. And, to dismount the navigator, you first have to remove the power cable.

The plus points are that it has a bright screen and the speakers are loud but you can turn down the volume. The wide screen is good but some may complain that it is too wide. The FM Traffic link is very effective and allows users to color roads with traffic congestion in a different color. And you can access points of interests and locations just with one touch making access extremely fast and convenient.
