The novel Shanghai Girls is all about two girls who are daughters of a wealthy businessman, who was into rickshaw business. The elder daughter named Pearl Chin is twenty one year old and the younger one is named May.
In the novel, Shanghai is a city that is wealthy and glamorous. It is labeled as Paris of Asia. Both the sisters in the novel are presented as modern and beautiful who do not believe much about traditions being followed in the city of Shanghai.
Pearl being a Dragon sign is strong as well as stubborn, and May is adorable like a true Sheep. But their happiness was not to stay long as their father loses them in gambling. They are sold to the suitors as their wives, who come from California with an intention of getting Chinese brides for themselves. The city they loved so much is bombed by Japanese, compelling the girls to undertake a journey to escape slavery and brutality of the soldiers.
They cross the Pacific and reach Los Angeles in America. The author here begins a new chapter in their life. The two Shanghai girls strive to get into the American way of life, fighting all the discrimination bravely and yet are hemmed in their old Chinatown’s ways.
The story of Shanghai Girls narrates the lifestyle, the hopes, the dreams and struggles of the two sisters. These two girls, although being sisters, are best friends who are deeply connected to each other and yet jealous of each other. It is about their sacrifices, devastation and the difficult choices they have to make in life.
To put it in a nutshell, this is an astounding novel one should make an effort to read.
